After clerking in Iowa's Second Judicial District in 1998 and 1999, Dan joined the firm as an associate in the litigation division, focusing on insurance defense and products liability.
Avid musicians and songwriters, Dan and his wife, C.J. Matthews, enjoyed recording and performing with their band "The Funnel Cakes." A lifelong animal lover, he doted on his two dogs, Chauncey and Phoebe.
"Dan had a very pragmatic and organized approach to his law practice. He was highly efficient," said Kris Tilley, who, as Dan's mentor in the firm, served as a sounding board for him as he developed his practice. "When analyzing any legal problem, Dan always saw the forest instead of the trees. He was an excellent lawyer and a great person to know, both as a professional colleague and friend. His passing is a terrible loss."
"Dan was a great asset to the firm and a great friend," said firm president, Scott Brennan. "He was a person who was always smiling, always upbeat. He enjoyed practicing law and, more importantly, he enjoyed life. We'll miss him."
